The African American Leadership Institute (AALI) in Austin is implementing a structured leadership development framework designed to increase civic awareness and professional opportunities for the city’s Black population. The Austin chapter of the organization is modeled after Leadership Austin, with a stated goal of expanding the program to other cities in the future.
AALI operates as a platform to provide African American leaders with the relationships, tools, and platforms required to lead with impact and clarity. The organization’s philosophy emphasizes that leadership extends beyond professional titles.

African American Leadership Institute
The organization is associated with 212 Catalysts, a 501c3 entity, and focuses its work on proven leadership development and cross-sector relationship-building.
The Fellowship Program
A central component of the institute is its flagship Fellowship Program. This 10-month immersive journey is a cohort-based initiative that supports African American leaders through mentorship and professionally focused, community-rooted learning.

The program is designed to equip professionals with the skills necessary to lead at the highest levels across the public, private, and social sectors. According to organizational data, AALI has organized more than 50 cohort sessions to date.
The Black X Conference
In addition to the immersive fellowship, AALI hosts the Black X Conference. This annual convening brings together Austin’s top executives, civic leaders, and professionals for the purposes of collaboration, connection, and learning.
The conference serves as a powerful gathering for change-makers. Past data indicates that the event has seen 145 attendees representing more than 300 different employers and organizations.
Corporate Engagement and Policy Goals
Beyond individual leadership training, AALI engages with corporations to address systemic barriers within the professional landscape. The institute works with these organizations to explore cultural aspects, processes, and policies that can improve the ability of companies to attract, equip, retain, and promote more Black professionals

This corporate engagement is intended to create an innovative community impact throughout Central Texas by aligning business practices with the goal of increasing Black representation in leadership roles.
Initial Impact and Cohort Composition
The institute’s inaugural class consisted of 38 fellows who were established leaders within their respective fields. This first cohort included a diverse range of professionals, including:
- Non-profit executives
- School administrators
- Technology workers
The program has also featured contributions from local leaders and entrepreneurs. Musician and entrepreneur SaulPaul was invited to speak and perform during the inaugural cohort, focusing on the importance of being a catalyst for change within one’s area of influence and leadership.
