Hantavirus Outbreak in Argentina: Alerts Issued After Multiple Deaths

Health authorities in Argentina have activated emergency alerts following a series of deaths linked to a Hantavirus outbreak. The alerts were issued to increase public awareness and implement preventive measures in regions where the virus is endemic.

Hantavirus causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a severe respiratory disease. In Argentina, the virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the inhalation of aerosolized particles from the urine, feces, or saliva of infected rodents, specifically the long-tailed pygmy rice rat.

Regional Risk and Transmission

The virus is endemic in several parts of the country, with a high concentration of cases historically reported in the southern provinces of Patagonia, including Neuquén, Río Negro, and Chubut. Risk increases in rural or forested areas where human activity overlaps with rodent habitats.

Unlike many other strains of hantavirus found globally, the Andes virus strain prevalent in Argentina and Chile is known for its ability to spread through person-to-person transmission. This characteristic necessitates more stringent monitoring and isolation protocols when cases are identified.

Prevention and Safety Guidelines

The Argentine Ministry of Health and regional health departments recommend specific precautions to reduce the risk of exposure, particularly for those visiting or living in high-risk areas.

• Ventilate enclosed spaces, such as cabins, sheds, or warehouses, for at least 30 minutes before entering and cleaning.
• Avoid sweeping or vacuuming areas with rodent droppings, as this can stir up the virus into the air; instead, use a disinfectant or a bleach solution to dampen the area before cleaning.
• Store food in airtight containers and maintain a clean environment to discourage rodent infestation.
• Use protective gear, including masks and gloves, when cleaning areas where rodents have been present.

Clinical Symptoms and Treatment

The onset of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome typically begins with non-specific, flu-like symptoms. These initial signs include fever, muscle aches, and fatigue.

As the disease progresses, patients often experience a rapid transition to severe respiratory distress. This stage is characterized by the filling of the lungs with fluid, which can lead to respiratory failure and death if not treated immediately in an intensive care setting.

There is currently no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for Hantavirus. Medical management focuses on supportive care, including oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation to sustain the patient until the body can fight the infection.

Health officials advise anyone experiencing these symptoms after visiting rural areas or being exposed to rodent-infested environments to seek immediate medical attention and inform healthcare providers of their travel history.
