NATO commanders have authorized repeated scrambles of allied fighter jets to monitor and intercept Russian flights that the alliance says fail to adhere to international aviation norms and endanger other air traffic. At Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania, French detachment personnel operate alongside Romanian air force F-16 units, forming a multinational effort to secure the region. Romanian Col. Mihaita Marin, commander of the Romanian air wing deployed at the base, has spoken publicly about the mission’s importance in maintaining regional stability and demonstrating alliance cohesion.

French aircrew members stationed at the base have been observed carrying out routine duties, including maintenance and mission preparation, while also engaging in recreational activities such as playing chess at the detachment’s headquarters during downtime. These moments reflect the sustained but measured nature of the deployment, which emphasizes readiness without escalation.

NATO’s air policing mission in the Baltics has been a standing response to Russia’s increased military aviation activity since 2014, with rotations of fighter jets from various alliance members conducting surveillance and interception operations.
