Former mixed martial artist Karlos Vémola, a prominent figure in the Czech MMA scene, is currently hospitalized while simultaneously fulfilling a new role as a commentator for OKTAGON MMA. Despite ongoing health challenges, Vémola recently returned to the public eye at February 1st‘s OKTAGON 83 event in Germany.

Vémola, who retired from MMA after a 47-fight career with 38 wins, revealed during the live broadcast that he had been discharged from the hospital specifically to take on the commentary position. He is scheduled to return to the hospital immediately following the event. He described a complex process to even attend the event, stating he required intravenous fluids twice during travel due to being on strong antibiotics.

The nature of Vémola’s hospitalization remains somewhat unclear, but he indicated it relates to a facial reconstruction. He referred to himself as a “real Terminator,” acknowledging that the structural support he now requires is likely to be a long-term issue. He estimates a recovery period of at least three to six months, depending on the progress of his healing.

Karlos Vémola, born on July 1, 1985, has a storied career in combat sports, beginning with Greco-Roman wrestling at the age of six. He transitioned through bodybuilding and kickboxing before becoming a professional mixed martial artist in 2008. He holds the distinction of being the first Czech fighter to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Throughout his career, Vémola has held multiple middleweight and light heavyweight titles in various Czech organizations, and was a former OKTAGON Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Champion. His fighting style is noted for his proficiency in ground combat and submissions, with 20 victories coming by submission.

Vémola’s recent retirement followed a trilogy fight against Attila Vegh, a highly anticipated matchup that culminated in a submission victory for Vémola at OKTAGON 58 in Prague. This win evened the score between the two fighters, after Vegh initially defeated Vémola by TKO in 2019 at OKTAGON 15. The possibility of a third fight was considered unlikely prior to their second encounter, according to OKTAGON MMA co-founder Pavol Neruda.

Prior to his final fight against Vegh, Vémola suffered a shocking knockout loss to Samuel Kristofic at OKTAGON 51. He has now signed a two-fight deal with OKTAGON MMA to settle the score with Kristofic and Vegh, with the rematch against Kristofic scheduled for November 9, 2026 at OKTAGON 63 in Bratislava. The date for the third fight against Vegh is yet to be announced, but is expected to take place at an OKTAGON MMA event in 2026.

Beyond MMA, Vémola has also considered other avenues, including professional boxing and participation in the Clash Dome, following his retirement. However, his current health situation and new role as a commentator suggest a continued, albeit different, involvement with the sport.

OKTAGON MMA continues to grow in popularity, having surpassed 750,000 attendees at its events since its founding. The organization is planning further expansion and new projects in the coming year.

The upcoming OKTAGON 84 event, scheduled for February 14, 2026, features a card including Paradeiser vs Brito, Kozma vs Wittner, Batfalský vs Black-Dell, Mudroch vs Duric, Kuzník vs Nafuka, Široký vs Fodor, Bartoněk vs Brajshori, Zavičák vs Maguire, and Havran vs Staszczak.
