The New York Times has published an investigative report suggesting that Adam Back, a prominent British cryptographer and cypherpunk, may be the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.

The article, released on April 8, 2026, presents a range of circumstantial evidence, including linguistic analysis, writing style similarities, and Back’s early discussions of Bitcoin’s architecture years before the cryptocurrency’s 2009 launch.

Adam Back has publicly denied the allegations, stating that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto, following the Times’ investigation.

The report places Back among a long list of individuals who have been speculated to be behind the Bitcoin pseudonym, including Hal Finney, Nick Szabo, Len Sassaman, Peter Todd, and Craig Wright.

In 2024, a UK High Court judge ruled definitively that Craig Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, describing his claim as “a lie” based on forged documents.

Despite ongoing speculation and various theories — ranging from individual creators to collective efforts or even intelligence agency involvement — the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains unconfirmed.

Bitcoin, whose pseudonymous creator is believed to control approximately 1.1 million BTC, continues to be a central focus of technological and financial discourse more than a decade after its inception.

As of now, no conclusive proof has emerged to verify any single individual as the inventor of Bitcoin, and the mystery surrounding Satoshi Nakamoto endures.
