Russia has returned the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers to Ukraine as part of a continuing exchange of war dead between the two nations. The exchange occurred on February 26, 2026, according to reports from the BBC and other news outlets.
In return for the 1,000 Ukrainian bodies, Russia received the remains of 35 Russian soldiers. The transaction was announced by Vladimir Medinsky, a top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, via a Telegram post that included imagery of bodies being unloaded from a truck.
Agreement and Framework for Exchanges
The return of remains is based on a formal agreement reached by Moscow and Kyiv during negotiations held in Istanbul in June 2025. Under the terms of this agreement, both sides committed to the return of the bodies of up to 6,000 soldiers each.
Beyond the exchange of deceased personnel, the Istanbul agreement also covers the return of specific categories of prisoners of war, including those who are sick, heavily wounded, or under the age of 25.
Ukraine confirmed the receipt of the 1,000 bodies on February 26, 2026, noting that the remains may belong to Ukrainian defenders based on prior information provided by the Russian side. Ukrainian officials stated that law enforcement agencies would be responsible for the identification of the soldiers.
Broader Diplomatic and Conflict Context
The exchange took place during a period of high-level diplomatic activity. Ukraine’s chief negotiator met with envoys of US President Donald Trump in Geneva to discuss economic plans for the reconstruction of Ukraine following the war.

These meetings were part of preparations for a third round of US-led talks intended to end the conflict, which has entered its fifth year since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. These planned talks are described as trilateral meetings that would also involve the Russian side.
Despite these diplomatic efforts and the exchange of bodies and prisoners, the peace talks have not yet produced results. Military hostilities continued alongside the diplomatic process; President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that hours before the Geneva talks on February 26, 2026, Russia launched 39 missiles and 420 drones across six different regions of Ukraine, resulting in dozens of injuries.
Casualty Reporting and Verification
The exchange of remains is a recurring element of the conflict, with thousands of bodies having been exchanged since 2022. However, transparency regarding total losses remains limited, as Kyiv and Moscow regularly publish estimates of the opposing side’s casualties while omitting detailed figures for their own losses.
Some reports regarding the February 26 exchange noted that the 1,000 returned bodies included five individuals who died while in captivity.
