The naming of a new housing development in north Swindon has sparked a broader argument that the James Bond franchise deserves a more permanent and widespread presence in residential planning.

On the Robin Gardens development, built by Taylor Wimpey, several streets have been named in honor of figures associated with the 007 series. These include Bond Place, Desmond Crescent, and Llewelyn Road, the latter two paying tribute to the actor who portrayed the character Q.

The development also includes a nod to Pierce Brosnan and the specifically highlighted Dench Close, which The Guardian describes as feeling more like a warning than a residential address.

The choice of Swindon for these tributes is rooted in a specific piece of cinematic history. The housing estate is situated on the site of a former Motorola manufacturing facility.

Around 2001, the exterior of that Motorola building was used as a filming location, serving as a Turkish oil refinery in the movie The World is Not Enough.

While the filming location is the primary driver for the street names, the region holds other connections to the franchise creator. Ian Fleming is buried in the parish church of St James’s in Sevenhampton, and he wrote Quantum of Solace within a 10-minute drive of Swindon’s town centre.

This tangible tribute comes at a time of uncertainty for the franchise’s audience. Following the conclusion of Daniel Craig’s tenure in No Time to Die, fans have existed in a state of limbo.

While it is confirmed that Denis Villeneuve will direct a future James Bond film, several key details remain unknown, including the release date and the actor who will take over the role of 007.

There are also lingering questions regarding how the franchise will evolve under the ownership of Amazon.

The Guardian suggests that in the absence of new films, these physical landmarks provide a necessary grounding for the anxieties of the fanbase.

The piece posits that the Swindon development should not be an isolated instance, suggesting that any housing estate developed near Bond-related locations should have the right to carry the franchise’s name.
