“Japan’s export restrictions, successful progress of self-reliance without damage”
Materials and parts have a big influence on Japan… Low equipment localization rate
It has been two years since the Supreme Court declared that Japan would ban the export of key materials in retaliation for its ruling on compensation for forced labor by Japan.
In the meantime, the government and companies have been conducting R&D to reduce dependence on Japan, but what about the report card so far?
Reporter Cho Yong-seong reports.
It is a ceramic material industry company that started as a venture company within the university and has been operating for over 20 years.
‘Ceramic beads’, beads that crush raw materials into nano units, were monopolized by a Japanese company until a few years ago, but this company has made them as small as 0.05mm through research and development.
These achievements led to the selection of a small and medium-sized company in materials, parts and equipment hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

Samsung Electronics has reduced its dependence on Japan by developing a system that can recycle hydrogen fluoride, one of the three key materials in the semiconductor process, which Japan has regulated exports.
Samsung SDI announced that it has started developing another regulated photoresist.
Japan, which accounted for nearly 16% of the world’s imported materials and parts, fell to an all-time low of 13% last month.
The government self-reported that there was no hit during the past two years when Japan implemented export restrictions, and that the diversification and independence of key items of customers is progressing successfully.

However, some core materials and parts still have a large influence in Japan and the degree of localization of equipment is low, so it is pointed out that steady technology development should be carried out.

In order for Japan’s retaliatory export control measures to become a turning point for materials, parts and equipment to become self-reliant, the government announced that it would prepare customized support projects for each company and apply special regulatory exceptions.
