NHK reported that the number of new COVID-19 cases in Tokyo exceeded 4,000 for the first time after recording 3,000 for four days in a row.
This is the highest number of confirmed cases per day since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Twenty-one additional Tokyo Olympic officials were also infected, and the number of confirmed cases after July 1 increased to 241.
The International Olympic Committee has stressed that the spread of infection in Japan is not due to the Olympics.
