The allegation that former Auditor General Choi Jae-hyung rented an apartment in his wife’s name to his second daughter at a lower price than the market price was recently reported through a media outlet. However, as a result of our coverage, it was confirmed that Choi’s eldest daughter borrowed 400 million won from her parents to buy an apartment in Gangnam, Seoul.
Correspondent Koh Jung-hyun was the sole reporter.
Last year, while serving as the chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection, Choi Jae-hyung, the former chief of the Board of Audit and Inspection, reported that he had a 400 million won bond in his wife’s name and that the reason was because he lent it to his children.
As a result of SBS coverage, it was confirmed that Choi’s first daughter bought an apartment in Gangnam-gu, Seoul in September 2019, and two months after the purchase, Choi’s wife lent her daughter 400 million won.
The father-in-law of former president Choi, who was engaged in the trading business, passed away in July 2015, and his wife and younger brothers inherited a villa in Gangnam-gu, Seoul with 16 households.
The following year, the villa was sold, and the deposits of the former president and wife, which were in the range of 200 million won, increased to 1 billion won.
When Choi’s wife lent 400 million won to her eldest daughter, the deposit decreased to 600 million won, but as they took 400 million won each, the inheritance of the father-in-law was converted into funds for the purchase of his granddaughter’s Gangnam apartment.
Choi’s rep said, “It was the money that my eldest daughter, who was homeless, lent because she couldn’t get a loan in the process of buying an apartment.”
However, he did not disclose how much the apartment was purchased for.
“The first daughter has deposited interest to her mother every month at an annual interest rate of 2.75%, and 80 million won, which is part of the principal, has been repaid twice in March and May of this year,” he said.
Regarding the point that it is not a ‘parent’s chance’, Choi’s representative said, “There is no position.”
The second daughter’s apartment in Mok-dong, who said that she rented a four-bedroom apartment at a lower price than the market price, is also an apartment her wife inherited from her father-in-law.
Choi explained, “I have paid all the related inheritance tax.”
