The Ministry of Education has decided to provide ‘replenishment classes’ to 2.03 million elementary, middle and high school students by next year to prevent learning deficits due to the corona virus.
We also plan to eliminate overcrowded classes with 28 or more students nationwide by 2024.
Reporter Kim Jong-gyun reports.
As the number of students who did not have basic academic skills in the evaluation of academic achievement last year due to COVID-19 increased significantly, the education authorities came up with a comprehensive plan for educational recovery.
The key is to support large-scale supplementary classes.
From the second semester, the ‘Learning Help’ program is being operated for 1.78 million students who lack basic academic skills or who want to supplement their studies.
This is 1/3 of the total elementary, middle and high school students.
Teachers organize one-on-one or small class groups of 5 or less to provide intensive instruction after school or during vacation.
Tuition is completely free of charge.

‘Tutoring’, a private tutoring program using university students and teachers from the university, and local instructors, is also newly operated.
The target audience is 240,000 elementary, middle and high school students.
If we add learning assistance and tutoring, we have about 2.03 million people.

We will increase the number of schools operating ‘cooperative classes’ with two teachers per class, and strengthen support for ‘Do Dream School’, which provides counseling for students’ emotional behavior, etc.
In addition, 3 trillion won will be invested by 2024 to reduce overcrowded classes with more than 28 students.
However, if it becomes difficult to return to school in the second semester due to the 4th pandemic of COVID-19, the effectiveness of this plan is expected to decrease.
The Ministry of Education is expected to announce whether or not to return to school for the second semester in the second week of August.
