Japan progressed to the round of 16 after beating Spain, the strong force following Germany, as the No. 1 player in the ‘Group of Death’.
Japan conceded the opening goal to Morata in the final group stage match of Group E of the Qatar World Cup.
Japan became the first Asian country to reach the round of 16 for two consecutive World Cups.
After beating Costa Rica 4-2, Germany lost to Spain on goal difference and failed to progress to the round of 16 again following the World Cup in Russia.
