SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won said, “I believe that the fate of a company is to become a challenger, not a champion.”

Chairman Choi said in his New Year’s greetings for 2022 sent by email to all members on the 31st, “I would like to express my gratitude to the members who made SK’s financial story, governance story, and global story last year despite the difficult corona environment.”

After referring to the reality that SK’s major business is in the midst of global hegemony, Chairman Choi said, “I don’t think geopolitical conflict has ever threatened economic development like this.” We have to respond creatively based on that.”

In particular, recalling that SK has set a bold goal of reducing carbon 200 million tons by 2030 to overcome the severe climate crisis, “SK will lead the future low-carbon, eco-friendly business through business model (BM) innovation. I’m sure,” he said.

He also suggested, “As the president of the Korea Chamber of Commerce for the past year, I realized that the company is still not reaching the level of the public.”

Chairman Choi said, “Even though we have worked hard for the happiness of our most precious members, there are still many ways to go,” he said.

Meanwhile, SK Group decided not to hold a separate New Year’s party in the new year following this year in consideration of the corona situation.

The following is the full text of SK Chairman Chey Tae-won’s New Year’s greetings

Dear SK members,

In the new year, I will greet you first through a letter. Along with the changes in our lives, the group New Year’s party is also changing naturally.

Above all, I would like to thank the members for their hard work who made SK’s Financial Story, Governance Story, and Global Story last year despite the uncomfortable daily life and difficult conditions caused by the corona crisis.

The corona phase will continue for a while, but the new year seems to open up a different world from the past two years. Unlike the early days of Corona, which we did not predict at all, I think that the energy we have accumulated while adapting to unfamiliar changes will lead to a bigger leap in the new year.

SK’s main business is a national strategic asset, standing in the midst of global hegemony. While conducting various global activities throughout the year, we were able to feel the multi-dimensional crisis surrounding us.

I don’t think geopolitical conflict has ever threatened economic development so much. The global situation is atypical and difficult to predict. We must not settle for past experiences, but respond creatively based on strategic flexibility.

A far more serious and intense wave than the geopolitical crisis is climate change. To overcome that wave, we have set a bold goal of reducing 200 million tonnes of carbon by 2030.

We must all accept the new goal as our calling and do our best to do what we can.

Now is the time for businesses to speak directly to the planet. 1% carbon reduction is an unavoidable task for our future, and I am confident that SK will lead the future low-carbon, eco-friendly business through BM innovation.

I would like to reiterate that it is also an important task for a company to gain the trust of the people. As the chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I realized that the company was still not reaching the public eye level.

If we do not gain the support of society, the ESG we pursue and the value of happiness that we seek to share with our stakeholders will not be fully realized. Don’t get tired or give up. Let’s keep trying while encouraging each other.

Dear SK members,

Lastly, I think about the happiness of the members who are the most precious to me. In the meantime, we have worked hard for each other’s happiness, but there is still a long way to go.

Your individual circumstances, of course, will not always be the same for each of you with your thoughts on happiness. Still, we are all heading for a better tomorrow than today, and I think the SK community has a role in that process. Let’s put our heads together to see what that role is. Modifying many of the systems within the company to suit the happiness of the members should be implemented first. I will always be with you on the wonderful journey of creating greater happiness.

I believe that the fate of the company is ‘to become a challenger, not a champion’. Let’s become a ‘frontier of a new time’ leading the future with a great challenging spirit in the new year.

Happy New Year.

Wishing all SK family health and happiness.
