(Seoul = Yonhap News) The US government appears to have halted the acquisition after finding that some parts of the Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter were made with Chinese raw materials.
According to foreign media such as Reuters and Bloomberg on the 7th (local time), Russell Gomeyer, spokesman for the F-35 Joint Projects Group (JPO) of the US Department of Defense, said, “In an investigation conducted in August, the turbomachine (fluid engine) pump of the F-35 engine in It has been determined that the magnet used is made of an alloy made in China which is not allowed under the procurement regulations of the Ministry of Defense.”
“We will temporarily suspend the acquisition of F-35 fighters in order to comply with the authorities’ regulations regarding metal materials,” he said.
The turbo engine of the F-35 engine connects the auxiliary power unit and the air circulator to supply power for ground maintenance, main engine start, and emergency power use.
A spokesman for Gourmeyer said there is no safety or security risk, such as transferring information to the outside or damaging the aircraft, to the Chinese alloy parts involved, he said there would be.
Lockheed Martin said in a statement that “this issue involves the samarium-cobalt alloy used in the turbomachinery manufactured by Honeywell.”
The Department of Defense intends to replace parts with other raw materials that do not violate applicable laws or regulations.
Current US law and the Defense Acquisition Regulations (DFARS) prohibit the use of special metals or alloys produced by countries such as China, Iran, North Korea and Russia. Let’s see the video.
