(Seoul = Yonhap News) Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has stripped off her second son Prince Andrew’s military title, who is facing a trial in the United States over allegations of sexual assault of a minor.
The British royal family said in a statement on the 13th (local time) that “with the Queen’s approval and consent, Prince Andrew’s military title and royal supporter status have been returned to the Queen.”
The royal family added that Prince Andrew’s title of ‘His royal highness’ would also be disabled and would face trial as a civilian in the future.
Prince Andrew, along with billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, is accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old American woman, Virginia Jupre, in 2001. He is expected to face a civil trial in the United States in the future.
When the decision to hold a civil suit was decided, more than 150 British military personnel said in an open letter to the Queen that they were outraged by Prince Andrew’s retaining his military title.
Prince Andrew has announced that he will suspend all official duties as a member of the royal family in 2019 following allegations of sexual assault. The following year, when his daughter Princess Beatrice got married, it was also omitted from the official wedding photos.
The decision suggests that the queen has finally lost patience with her second son, who was called ‘the most cherished child’, local media reported.
