[정치]What is the agenda for the Korea-U.S. summit?

[앵커]

At this summit, held for the first time since the inauguration of the Yun Seok-Yeol administration, it is expected that cooperation on the Korean Peninsula issue, major economic issues, and international issues such as the Ukraine crisis will become concrete.

Reporter Kim Se-ho pointed out the main agenda for this summit.

The most important aspect of this summit is the Korean Peninsula issue, including the North Korean nuclear issue.

Since this year, North Korea has conducted missile test-fires 16 times, including ballistic missiles, and the situation of preparations for a nuclear test has been captured.

Discussions are expected to focus on practical measures to strengthen deterrence against North Korea and principled North Korea policy.

To this end, the re-launch of the Korea-U.S. extended deterrence strategy council, the deployment of strategic assets for the US military, and measures to strengthen the ROK-US outdoor maneuver training are being discussed.

Economic and security cooperation is also a major agenda item.

R&D and supply chain cooperation plans in high-tech fields such as semiconductors, batteries, and artificial intelligence are expected to be discussed in depth.

In addition, cooperation in the field of nuclear power, such as next-generation nuclear technology and joint entry into overseas markets, is also expected to rise to the summit table.

Regional cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and coordination on global issues are attracting attention along with economic and security cooperation measures.

In particular, it seems that Korea’s participation in the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, IPEF, will be formalized.

In addition, I am interested in what kind of cooperation the US side will ask for and how our side will respond in relation to Ukraine, which is being invaded by Russia.

Attention is focused on how the Yun Seok-yeol administration, which emphasized differentiation from the previous administration, will materialize foreign security and domestic and foreign economic policies with the Korea-US summit as an opportunity.
