[건강 Q&A] Ankle ligament tear, what is the difference in symptoms between surgical and non-surgical treatment?

When the ankle joint is bent too far in or out beyond its normal range of motion, the ligaments that hold the ankle joint are damaged, known as an ankle sprain.

A sprained ankle, referred to as a ‘sprained ankle’, is one of the common diseases that easily occur in everyday life. Even if the ankle ligament is slightly stretched, if the ankle sprain has occurred, do not overuse the ankle and take enough stability. Cold compresses and stabilizing treatments are also helpful.

Treatment of disease, a divided approach with criteria?

If the ankle ligaments partially tear due to the impact of bending the ankle, the ankle pain is felt severely, and symptoms of ankle swelling appear. In addition, abnormal symptoms such as stiff joints or bruising are also accompanied.

In this case, non-surgical treatment such as physical therapy, injection therapy, and wearing a brace in the hospital is required. If the ankle ligament is completely torn, surgical treatment is required to stitch or reconstruct a torn ankle ligament.

There are many cases that are neglected without properly coping with a mild tear and an ankle that does not feel great discomfort in everyday life. In this case, the damaged ankle ligament is unable to properly support the ankle joint during abnormal healing, which is likely to lead to chronic ankle instability.

If chronic ankle instability persists, damage to the ankle cartilage can develop, so appropriate treatment is required. To prevent ankle sprains and ankle ligament tears, it is recommended to continue exercising to strengthen the muscles around the normal ankle. Also, avoid vigorous exercise, and before starting exercise, relieve joint stiffness by stretching.
