In response to the surge in oil prices, the gas tax has been cut to 37% starting this month, but some gas stations are still charging high prices.

The government set up a joint enforcement team to conduct on-site inspections.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy formed a gas station market inspection team together with the Ministry of Strategy and Finance and the Fair Trade Commission to inspect high-priced gas stations in downtown Seoul.

The first inspection target is three elevated gas stations in Jongno, Guro, and Seocho-gu.

The price of gasoline and diesel is 2,598 won.

The inspection team asked why the price was so high even though the fuel tax was cut by 37%.

The gas station explained that the quantity supplied before the cut was still there, and the inspection team also said that they confirmed that the products that reflected the fuel tax cut were not in stock.

An official from the inspection team explained that, as the price is high, the sales volume of gasoline is low, and the inventory seems to have accumulated for a long time.

The joint inspection team will conduct on-site inspections of 10 gas stations in the metropolitan area four times this week alone, and plan to expand the scope of the investigation to the whole country in the future.

In addition, we decided to check the supply price of oil companies every day, and also investigate the supply and demand and quality status of refineries and oil storage stations.

An official from the inspection team said that it had inspected gas stations in the metropolitan area and Chungcheong area when the fuel tax was cut by 20% in November last year, but this is the first time to investigate gas stations nationwide.

He also emphasized that although gas stations are voluntary, if a price mismatch or tax evasion is detected, we will take action according to the law.

In addition, we asked the gas station associations to cooperate to reduce the price as soon as possible.
