[경제]Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs “Isolation of 450,000 tonnes of rice this year’s harvest season”

[앵커]

This year, as rice prices fell the most in 45 years and production increased, farmers recently demanded government measures one after another.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs decided to quarantine 450,000 tonnes of rice during the harvest season, which is the largest amount ever.

Yes. Market quarantine is a government measure to isolate ‘surplus rice’, which is literally more than consumption, from the market.

By adding 200,000 tonnes to the 250,000 tonnes expected to be overproduced this year, a total of 450,000 tonnes will be quarantined from the market during the harvest season from October to December, the largest amount since the introduction of the public stockpile in 2005.

The reason for adjusting the amount released in the market is to prevent a fall in rice prices.

The price of local rice, which started to fall in October last year, is on a downward trend every day.

On the 5th, the price of farmed rice was 41,185 won per 20kg, down 24.8% from 54,758 won in the same period last year.

In terms of the rate of decline, this is the largest decline in 45 years since 1977.

Rice production increased by 10.7% from 3507,000 tonnes in 2020 to 3882,000 tonnes last year,

The consumption of rice per capita has dropped significantly from 93.9 kg in 2000 to 56.9 kg last year, continuing the downward trend every year.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs explains that if 450,000 tonnes of rice are included in the public stock pile, an increase of 100,000 tonnes since last year, 900,000 tonnes of rice will be isolated from the market during the harvest season this year, except from the 450,000 tonnes of quarantine volume in the market.

At the same time, the ‘strategic crop direct payment system’, which pays more than 1 million won per 10,000 square meters, will be introduced from next year when strategic crops such as rice flour, wheat and beans soybeans are grown.

With this measure, attention is focused on whether rice prices, which have fallen sharply since last year’s harvest season, will recover to an appropriate level.

It has been reported by the Ministry of Economy.
