[과학]Detect all 4 viruses in 40 minutes!…Develop a new PCR tester

[앵커]

Gene amplification tests and PCR tests have high accuracy, but it takes a long time to confirm the results, so it is usually only the day after the test to know whether it is confirmed or not.

However, domestic researchers have developed a PCR tester that can test all viruses at the same time, including corona, in just 40 minutes.

Reporter Yang Hwa-yeong covered the story.

What I have become familiar with after COVID-19 is the PCR test.

The accuracy is high, but the disadvantage is that it takes a long time to know the result after the test.

After gene amplification, fluorescence measurement is used to detect infection. In the past, multiple fluorescence filters were used, making the device large and heavy and taking a long time to measure.

However, domestic researchers have developed a PCR diagnostic device that can quickly diagnose without a filter by applying wireless communication technology.

The core is a fluorescence signal separation technology based on digital codes.

With a specific code that only recognizes the fluorescence signal of the desired virus, we have succeeded in detecting the virus without crosstalk.

Through this, the detection time has been greatly reduced from 4 hours to 40 minutes, and not only corona, but also different viruses such as flu, swine flu, and Zika virus can be diagnosed at the same time.

The PCR diagnostic device developed this time consists of simple optical devices, which reduce size by about 40% and are cheap.

In addition, there is a high possibility of localization because only the light source part of the existing equipment needs to be changed.

[허철 / ETRI 진단치료기연구실장 : 현재 의료기기 업체 및 진단기기 업체의 기술 이전을 추진 중이며 향후 2년 내 상용화가 가능할 것으로 생각하고 있습니다.]

The global market for COVID-19 diagnostic devices will decrease from next year, but the field of diagnosis of infectious diseases other than COVID-19 is expected to expand.

When this technology is commercialised, it is expected to play a major role in responding to emerging infectious diseases.
