[국제]Canada reopens US border for the first time in 16 months… The US is ‘not yet’

[앵커]

Canada reopened its border with the U.S., which it closed in May last year to contain the spread of COVID-19, after 16 months.

It allowed entry of vaccinated Americans, but the United States has not yet allowed Canadians to enter.

This is a report by Lee Dong-heon, a reporter.

There is an endless stream of cars from the United States to Canada.

When the Canadian border reopened after 16 months, the number of visiting vehicles came all at once.

The Canadian border, which was closed in May last year, was reopened to Americans on the 9th local time to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

However, vaccination must be completed 2 weeks prior to entry and a negative confirmation of COVID-19 test performed within 3 days prior to departure must be submitted.

It took several hours to cross the border, checking entry requirements one by one.

However, the United States did not open its borders to Canada.

The policy is that Canadians will not be permitted to visit the United States for any other purpose than essential until at least the 21st of this month.

Nevertheless, Canada opened its borders first because a large proportion of Canada’s tourism industry relies on US tourists.

Starting next month, Canada will waive mandatory quarantine and allow entry to all international travelers outside the United States who have completed their vaccinations and submitted a negative testimonial.

The United States is also considering a plan to gradually allow foreign nationals who have been vaccinated to visit.
