An open meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile ICBM launch will be held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 21st local time.

Ahead of the meeting, the G7 of seven major countries condemned North Korea and urged the Security Council to take additional serious steps.

The foreign ministers of the seven major G7 nations issued a statement two days after North Korea’s ICBM launch, condemning North Korea and urging the UN Security Council to take additional serious action.

“North Korea’s actions call for a united and firm response from the international community, including significant additional measures from the UN Security Council,” the G7 foreign ministers said in a statement.

Foreign ministers noted that North Korea’s series of ballistic missile provocations underscored Pyongyang’s willingness to develop and diversify its nuclear weapons and missile capabilities.

“North Korea’s reckless behavior poses a serious threat to regional and international peace and security and undermines the global non-proliferation regime,” he said.

At the same time, the G7 expressed full solidarity with South Korea and Japan, and urged North Korea to stop its destabilizing behavior.

The G7 statement came a day before an open meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss North Korea’s ICBM launch.

It is interpreted as ordering the roles of China and Russia, who are permanent members of the board of directors.

In May, the Security Council voted on a resolution on additional sanctions against North Korea led by the United States in response to North Korea’s ICBM launch, but it was defeated due to China and Russia’s veto.

In this meeting, it can be seen that China and Russia, who have veto powers, are very likely to oppose the decision on additional sanctions against North Korea.
