[국제]India, the world’s 5th largest economy… The economy of the common people has ‘stumbled’ due to a surge in prices

[앵커]

India has recently surpassed the UK in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) for the first time, becoming the world’s fifth largest economy.

However, as the price of a table rises dramatically, the economic burden on citizens increases.

Reporter Seong-mi Kim from India reported.

India’s consumer price index rose 7% last month compared to the same period last year.

In particular, as the price of food, which is closely linked to the price of a table, continues to rise, the household burden on ordinary people increases.

In order to reduce the cost of living as much as possible, the number of people visiting traditional markets instead of large markets has increased significantly.

In particular, as the price of eggs has risen steadily, he won 200 rupees for 10 bucks, or more than 3,000 Korean, the price of potatoes has risen by almost 20% compared to last month.

Salmon, which depends on imports, costs 3,600 rupees per kilo, or more than 60,000 Korean won.

This is a shop I often go to buy fruit and vegetables. Compared to a few days ago, the price increase of about 10-20% is visible.

The situation of Korean supermarkets, which are mainly visited by Koreans, is even worse.

Foods such as gochujang, soybean paste, and kimchi, which are the main foods of Koreans, have jumped in price because they have to be imported from Korea.

There are several reasons for the sudden increase in food prices, such as COVID-19 and production and supply disruptions caused by Russia’s attack on Ukraine, but there is also analysis that climate change played the biggest part.

India suffered from an unusual heat wave and heavy rains this year, causing severe damage to farms and poor crops, leading to an increase in food prices for crops.

As the cost of food continues to rise and the economic burden on the common people continues, protests were held in New Delhi earlier this month to protest the high price.

India, once a British colony, has achieved rapid economic development and surpassed Britain in terms of gross domestic product this year.

In fact, the economic hardship of citizens is exacerbated by rising prices.
