At least 13 people have been killed and around 100 injured when the Sumeru volcano on the Indonesian island of Java has erupted.

Indonesia, made up of over 17,000 islands, is located in the Pacific Rim orogeny called the ‘Ring of Fire’, so volcanic activity and earthquakes are frequent.

A man with volcanic ash all over his body was rescued and taken to hospital.

At the hospital, rescued residents are being treated for burns.

A large-scale eruption of Sumeru Volcano, east of Java, Indonesia, has killed at least 10 people and injured about 100.

With a height of 3,676 meters, Sumeru Volcano is the highest mountain on Java Island.

Volcanic ash quickly covered 11 villages near the volcano.

As volcanic ash obscured the sky, darkness fell everywhere, and residents evacuated to the bottom of the mountain one after another in vehicles and motorcycles.

The village at the foot of the mountain is covered with volcanic ash, making it look like a black-and-white photo.

Houses, cars, motorcycles, and crops were all covered with ash.

Thousands of livestock, including cattle and chickens, have lost their lives without an opportunity to evacuate.

The road where the hot lava flowed down was also cut off.

Indonesian authorities have blocked access within five kilometers of the crater, fearing further eruptions of Sumeru Volcano.

Indonesia, made up of over 17,000 islands, is located in the Pacific Rim orogeny called the ‘Ring of Fire’, so volcanic activity and earthquakes are frequent.

In particular, it is known that there are 128 active volcanoes.
