[국제]Xi Jinping urges Shanghai Cooperation Organization to “jointly tackle terrorism” amid Afghan unrest

Amid growing security concerns over the Taliban’s rise to power in Afghanistan, Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed a joint countermeasure against terrorism among members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

On the 17th, President Xi attended the organization’s summit via video and said, “Let’s go on a path of taking responsibility for safety together,” state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a group of eight countries including China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan, and all of its member countries are geographically close to Afghanistan.

China, which borders Afghanistan in Xinjiang, is concerned that the Taliban may support terrorism in China by the Islamic Movement of East Turkestan (ETIM), an independent Xinjiang separatist group.

Xi said, “We must resolutely strike the Islamic movement in East Turkestan, as well as violent terrorism, ethnic division, and extreme religious forces.”

Afghanistan has been participating in the organization as an observer since 2012, and Xi also mentioned the need for dialogue with Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, President Xi stressed that it is unacceptable to preach or interfere in the internal affairs of other countries against the United States’ rallying Britain and Australia to contain China.

He said, “It is absolutely unacceptable to preach as if beating other countries,” he said.
