Dr. Kang Dong-woo of Sexology shared his impressions of collaborating with ‘Eun-Young Oh Report – Marriage Hell’ to shed light on the issue of sexless couples in Korea.
Recently, Dr. Kang Dong-woo of Sexology conducted an interview with iMBC and MBC’s liberal arts program ‘Oh Eun-young Report – Marriage Hell’ (hereinafter ‘Marriage Hell’). ‘Marriage Hell’ is a real talk mentoring program where ‘national mentor’ Dr. Pregnancy, childbirth, conversation, economic outlook, sleeping, and occupation, etc. All couples experience, but they pay attention to the real conflicts and inner conflicts that are difficult to get out of their mouths.
Dr. Kang, who collaborated with the production team of ‘Marriage Hell’ in this sexless special, is Korea’s first doctor of sexology, who studied at the Kinsey Institute in the United States. Dr. Kang, together with the production team of ‘Marriage Hell’, produced the 2022 version of the ‘Korean Kinsey Report’ for about 1,000 married men and women. Through this report, a detailed investigation and analysis of the frequency of sexual life of Korean couples, causes of dissatisfaction, position, foreplay and afterplay, masturbation frequency, prostitution, and affair were carried out.
He said that he has been informed of the seriousness of the sexless problem of couples through his appearances on TV shows. Regarding the opportunity for collaboration with the production team of ‘Marriage Hell’, Dr. Kang said, “The time when the production team requested collaboration and the time to publish statistics (related to the sexless issue) coincided. Through this issue, the blind spot of Korea’s unique sexual culture I wanted to point out,” he explained.
Dr. Kang said that the issue of sexless that will be discussed in ‘Marriage Hell’ is not something to be taken lightly.
“The sexless ratio of married couples around the world is about 20 percent. However, in Korea, the number of married people is about 40 percent. It is ranked first in the world. Japan is next. Discords arising from marital sexual problems naturally have a negative impact on children.”
Dr. Kang backed up his claim with statistics. Couples with a happiness index score of 9 out of 10 or higher had a sexless rate of 30 percent, while in the lower-ranking groups, the sexless rate reached 60 percent. Dr. Kang repeatedly emphasized that “marital happiness also affects the emotional stability of children.”
In the first part of the sexless special of ‘Marriage Hell’, which aired on the 27th of last month, a couple who had entered their eighth year of marriage but had not had sex at all except for having a second child appeared, and it was regretful.
At the time, Dr. Kang also agreed with Dr. Oh Eun-young’s statement that “the cause of sexless is communication lease.” He said, “Sex problems start with psychological problems between married couples. Understanding and developing each other is the basis of sex education.”
Dr. Kang emphasized repeatedly, “There should be more programs like ‘Marriage Hell’.” He said, “Broadcasts that talk about sexuality in depth should increase. Because there are restrictions in broadcasting, a lot of content dealing with sexual issues has moved to YouTube. Learning about sexual discourse through YouTube has its limits.”
Although there are many observational entertainment programs that deal with the couple’s daily life, he also pointed out that they do not deal with sexual issues. Dr. Kang said, “Not dealing with sexual issues is like a shell. Behind a harmonious couple is a happy sex life.”
Dr. Kang also asked for expectations for the second part of the sexless special of ‘Marriage Hell’, which was broadcast on the same day. On this day’s episode, big data expert and broadcaster Jeon Min-ki and former weather caster Jeong Seon-young couple visit Dr. Oh.
Dr. Kang said, “I hope viewers will have the courage to look at sexual problems directly through ‘Marriage Hell.’ It is necessary to think of it as an important relationship with a loved one,” he said.
On the other hand, the 2nd part of ‘Marriage Hell’ sexless special will be broadcast on MBC at 10:30 pm on the 4th.
