The prosecution, which is investigating the allegation of preferential treatment for the Daejang-dong development project, called on Jeong Jin-sang, deputy chief of the Secretariat of the Election Countermeasures Committee, who is considered to be the closest aide to the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, to investigate the matter privately on the 13th.

According to the Dong-A Ilbo coverage on the 16th, the investigation team in charge of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office (team leader Kim Tae-hoon, 4th deputy chief prosecutor) called the Deputy Chief of Staff on the 13th and conducted the investigation until dawn on the 14th. It is known that Deputy Director-General Jeong agreed to the late-night investigation with the prosecution.

Initially, the prosecution set up a policy to call the Deputy Chief of Staff in early December of last year to investigate and coordinated the investigation schedule. However, on December 10 last year, the investigation schedule was delayed due to the extreme choice of former Seongnam Urban Development Corporation development business head Yu Yu-gi. Afterwards, the prosecution told the Deputy Chief of Staff to appear on the 8th of this month to undergo an investigation, but it is reported that the Deputy Chief of Staff postponed the investigation again for reasons such as “the investigation schedule was leaked to the outside.”

Prosecutors are reported to have summoned the head of the government and questioned whether Seongnam City’s policy-making line was involved in the Daejang-dong development project and alleged involvement in the resignation of former Seongnam Urban Development Corporation president Hwang Moo-seong on February 6, 2015. Deputy Chief of Staff Jeong served as the head of the policy office when presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea was serving as mayor of Seongnam, and is considered one of Lee’s closest aides.

It is known that the Deputy Chief of Staff signed at least nine official documents related to Daejang-dong while serving as the head of the Seongnam City Policy Office. In addition, the transcript of the conversation between former general manager Yoo and former president Hwang includes contents such as the content of former general manager Yoo urging Hwang to resign, referring to candidate Lee and deputy head of government.

Regarding the prosecution’s investigation, lawyer Na Seung-cheol, the deputy chief’s legal representative, said, “There is nothing I can confirm.” Attorney Na acted as an attorney for the 1st to 3rd trial in Lee’s case for violating the Public Official Election Act in 2018.
