[이데일리 스타in 임정우 기자] Seo Chae-hyeon (18, Shin Jeong-go) advanced to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics sports climbing finals.

Seo Chae-hyun finished 2nd in the final ranking in the women’s combine qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held at Aomi Urban Sports Park in Tokyo, Japan on the 4th. Seo Chae-hyun will compete for a medal with 7 other finalists in the final to be held at the same location at 5:30 pm on the 6th.

The sports climbing combine event, which was first adopted as an official event in this tournament, is ranked based on the overall performance of the three events: speed, bouldering, and lead. Since the final ranking is determined in the order of the lowest score multiplied by the ranking of each event, it is advantageous to record as high as possible in the three events. Seo Chae-hyun scored a total of 85 points by multiplying the three rankings: 17th in speed, 5th in bouldering, and 1st in lead.

Seo Chae-hyun took 17th place (10.01 seconds) in the speed of the first event (the event that quickly climbs a 15-meter-tall incline wall). However, in the second bouldering, Seo Chae-hyun took 5th place with a record of ‘2T4z 5 5’, raising the middle ranking to 10th.

Bouldering is an event in which a person passes through four courses composed of various artificial structures on a 4.5-meter-high rock wall without a rope. You are given 5 minutes for each course. Seo Chae-hyun climbed easily on the 1st and 2nd courses out of the 4, but only succeeded in holding the 3rd and 4th mid-holds until the final ‘2T4z 5 5’ was recorded. This means that the top hold (protrusion) was successful 2 times, and the center hold-in zone was shot 4 times. 5 5 means you tried the top and zone 5 times each.

Seo Chae-hyun showed her overwhelming skills in the lead, her main and last event. Reed is an event in which a rope is tied and who can climb the highest in 6 minutes on a 15-meter-tall rock wall. Each climb is scored by the number of holds touched. If you hang the rope on the quick draw installed at the highest point, it is perfect. Seo Chae-hyun climbed 40 holds just below the chin point to take the lead and jumped to second place in the final ranking.

Slovenia’s Yanya Garnbrent (22, Slovenia, 56 points) took the first place in the preliminary round. Seo Chae-hyun came in second place, followed by Japan’s Miho Nonaka (24, 96 points) and Noguchi Akiyo (32, 162 points) in third and fourth places, respectively.

Among the eight finalists, Seo Chae-hyun is the youngest and only teenager, and if she gets on the podium, it is expected to be a record by itself. Seo Chae-hyeon, who is called a high-profile prospect after Kim Ja-in, sets out to hunt for medals in the finals.
