BTS postpones enlistment of all members… Discussion of alternative service system fails

The National Assembly discussed a bill to amend the Military Service Act that would allow pop culture artists to perform alternative service just like pure artists or sportsmen, but it was ultimately put on hold.

As a result, BTS’ enlistment is inevitable, but it has been confirmed that all enlistments have been delayed by one year in accordance with the amendment to the Military Service Act for Outstanding Popular Culture and Arts, which took effect in June.

The National Assembly’s National Defense Committee, the second lieutenant of the bill review, discussed a bill that would allow pop culture artists who have elevated national prestige to substitute for military service through volunteer work.

Pros and cons were fiercely divided regardless of the opposition.

In the end, the National Assembly could not come to a conclusion on the amendment to the Military Service Act and decided to hold a public debate, including a public hearing.

The Ministry of National Defense is in the position that a careful review is necessary in consideration of objective standards or fairness.

Separately, the amendment to the Military Service Act, which allows outstanding pop culture artists to defer their enlistment until the age of 30 upon the recommendation of the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, came into effect in June.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said, “Last July, BTS members applied for a postponement of enlistment and submitted a letter of recommendation from the minister to the Military Manpower Administration.

Accordingly, the oldest member, ‘Jin’, born in 1992, will be active until December next year.

The seven-member BTS can be seen by the end of next year.
