[속보] “Hyeonmoo missile hit during South Korea-US missile fire… No casualties”

South Korean and US military authorities fired a combined surface-to-surface missile into the East Sea in response to North Korea’s interim-range ballistic missile (IRBM) provocation on the 5th, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

In this combined surface-to-surface missile firing, the South Korean military and USFK fired four ATACMS two each into the East Sea to precisely hit a virtual target. The Joint Chiefs of Staff explained that this demonstrates the ability of the combined forces to prevent further provocations in North Korea.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff emphasized, “North Korea maintains a constant vigilance posture regardless of where it provokes, showing that it has the ability and willingness to neutralize the source of the provocation.” “Our military maintains a posture of full readiness to ensure a resounding victory at all times while tracking and monitoring related trends in preparation for further North Korean provocations,” he said.

According to the military, this is the fourth time South Korean and American forces have fired in response to a North Korean missile provocation. In March, May, and June, the ROK and the US fired 14 strike shots (12 shots from the ROK side and 2 shots from the US side) as counter shots.

Meanwhile, the military also fired a ‘Hyunmoo-2’ ballistic missile in the combined response firing that took place at around 1 am on the same day, but an accident occurred after an abnormal flight and crashed into the base immediately after its launch. The army is investigating the case, and so far no injuries have been confirmed. Inquiries from Gangneung residents, who were startled by the flash and loud roar produced by the missile’s impact, flooded government offices and the media. However, the army didn’t even have a guide to ‘training’, so the confusion continued through the night. Photos and videos of what appears to be an explosion of flames have gone viral online.

North Korea fired an IRBM from the Mupyeong-ri area in Jagang Province at around 7:23 am the previous day, which flew 4,500 km through the Japanese archipelago.
