[속보] Roman Abramovich disqualified as owner of Chelsea

Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich, who had been the owner of Chelsea FC in the English Premier League (EPL) for about 20 years since 2003, announced on the 2nd (local time) that it would sell the club. A close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who invaded Ukraine, said the decision was “unbelievably difficult”. The British government’s sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine were also applied through the English Premier League, where Russian capital is invested, and an example has emerged.

On the 12th (local time), the Premier League has officially announced that Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich will be stripped of his owner’s license. The Secretariat explained that the decision was made by the Premier League board in response to the sanctions imposed by the British government.

“Subject to the UK government qualifications which expire on 31 May 2022, the decisions of the Premier League Board of Directors do not affect the training and match schedules of Chelsea FC,” it added.

This is an additional measure following the UK government’s announcement on the 10th that it would freeze his assets, including Chelsea FC, and ban him from staying in the UK for Roman Abramovich.

Earlier, the British government included seven Russian companies under sanctions, including asset freezes, including Roman Abramovich. Roman Abramovich, a Russian oil tycoon and also known as an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, took over Chelsea FC in 2003 and has been running it.

Roman Abramovich announced his intention to sell Chelsea FC on the 2nd in the atmosphere of such sanctions, but the British government put it on hold, followed by measures to disqualify the owner.
