A commercial satellite image of the submarine port in Sinpo, South Hamgyong Province, North Korea on the 18th showed six boats and ships gathered at the submarine construction pier, suggesting that North Korea is preparing to launch a new submarine. 21st (local time).

Boats and dry docks have often been seen around the submarine’s launch pier, but this is the first time six ships and boats have been found together. In addition, a towing device that allows the boat to tow the submarine is attached to the bottom rail of the launch dock. When launching a submarine, a floating dock can be used to allow the submarine to slowly enter the sea. The boat was not captured in the video on the 12th, so it is assumed that preparations for launch began later.

It is still unknown where the launched submarine will dock. In this video, the missile launch port of the Whale/Sinpo class experimental ballistic missile launcher was clearly captured. The launch port located on the submarine sail has a diameter of 1.8 m and is large enough to launch the Pukguksong-1 and 1.4m-diameter Pukguksong-3 submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

Meanwhile, in 2016, North Korea began building what appears to be a new ballistic missile submarine (SSB). Pictures released when Kim Jong-un, secretary general of the Workers’ Party of Korea, visited the shipyard in 2019 suggest that North Korea is either building a new SSB or refurbishing a Romeo-class submarine, and that the construction almost complete. The submarine building’s forecourt has been empty since the summer of 2020, and North Korea has never commented on whether or not to launch a new submarine.
