[연합시론] Yoon Seok-yeol caught up in controversy over ‘Apologize to dog’ following ‘Chun Doo-hwan’s defense’

(Seoul = Yonhap News) On the 21st, when former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol, the presidential contender for People’s Power, expressed regret and apology for his ‘remarks in defense of Chun Doo-hwan’, a photo of an apology to his dog was uploaded to social media and again engulfed in controversy. On the former President Yoon’s SNS ‘Tory Stargram’, along with a photo of a scene where he gave an apple to his dog ‘Tori’ that night, a post saying, “I like Indian apples because I resemble my dad,” was uploaded and then deleted. What happened after arguing that “President Chun Doo-hwan did something wrong, but there are many people who say he did well in politics, except for the military coup and the May 18th”, and then bowed his head saying “I’m sorry” two days after the controversy arose. am. Then, bitter reactions from netizens such as “Is an apology a dog or a dog? Is it mocking the people?”, and the political circles of the ruling and opposition parties also poured out accusations. It is not enough to have an iron-fisted ruler who destroyed the constitution and suppressed human rights, but we cannot hide our concern over the actions of former President Yoon, who seems to have made an apology and even made a caricature of that apology.

It was very inappropriate for former President Yoon to mention the former president as an example of arranging talent in the right place. The general perception is that the former president was the main cause of military coup d’états and human rights abuses, and that his seven years in power were a dark period in modern history that was later subject to judicial condemnation. So far, he has refused to apologize for the bloody crackdown in Gwangju, which resulted in thousands of casualties. Former President Yoon, who wants to become president through a democratic election, should have apologized immediately and corrected if the statement ‘supporting Chun Doo-hwan’ was a mistake or a mistake. However, at a debate in Daegu the next day, he emphasized that his remarks were beliefs, saying, “In order to revive the economy and give the future to young people, anyone in any country or any government must do something beyond the political and comprehensive lessons.” As the aftermath of the remarks intensified, ex-President Yoon hastily apologized, saying, “More than anyone else, I apologize to those who have suffered under the Chun Doo-hwan regime,” but the aftershocks did not subside. The photo of the problem of giving an apple to a dog came out in the midst of this.

Ryeom Yeom, a spokesperson for Hong Joon-pyo’s campaign, who is competing in the primary, said, “I already fell on my face and hit the back of the head of the people who were bowing down. What does it mean if it’s not ‘Give me an apology’? did. Yoo Seung-min, a spokesman for the camp of former lawmaker Kwon Seong-ju, also criticized in a commentary, saying, “A bizarre candidate who forcibly apologizes in front and ridicules him in the back has absolutely no qualifications as president of the Republic of Korea.” Won Hee-ryong, senior spokesperson for the camp of the Jeju governor, Shin Bo-ra, commented, “I am astonished at the Candidate Yun’s camp, where even the apology caricatures.” CEO Lee Jun-seok also posted on SNS, “When I wake up in the morning, it’s something that transcends common sense… it’s complicated.” Presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea, who was cornered by the ‘Daejang-dong suspicion’, visited the May 18 National Cemetery in Gwangju on the 22nd and said, “Mr. He was a person who only enjoyed the benefits in the created democratic system, so he would not have understood the harshness of the name Chun Doo-hwan at all.”

It is far from the common sense or sentiment of the people that former President Yoon evaluated the former president, who violated the constitutional order and sacrificed innocent lives, as a leader who valued talented people. Democracy and its awareness of history are questionable. Isn’t former president Yoon the presidential candidate of the opposition party who wants to be chosen by the people? If so, I would like you to look back on whether there were any problems with your actions, including the controversy over ‘Chun Doo-hwan’s remarks’. Also, it is the right attitude to listen to various criticisms and criticisms, rather than trying to confront them by saying, ‘You misrepresent my words.’ The controversy over this photo of giving an apology to a dog even led to a reaction that it was a mockery of the people. Instead of dismissing it as a mere mistake by the working-level staff, I hope that former President Yoon will come forward and explain.
