[우크라 침공] U.S. and Russia responded to the cessation of natural gas supply by expanding exports (comprehensive)

Announcing a second plan to increase natural gas exports… ‘Russia weaponizes energy’

Russia halts gas supply to Poland and Bulgaria

Nasvi Province (AP = Yonhap News) The governments of Poland and Bulgaria said the day before that Russia’s energy giant and state-owned Gazprom had notified that it would stop supplying natural gas from the 27th (local time). Russia has threatened to cut off gas supply to European countries unless the purchase price is paid in rubles. (Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ryu Ji-bok, reporter Koo Jeong-mo = The US took measures to increase its own exports after Russia stopped supplying natural gas to Poland and Bulgaria on the 27th (local time).

The U.S. Department of Energy announced on the same day that it would allow an additional 500 million cubic feet (14.15 million cubic meters) of LNG exports per day to two liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.

This is enough to heat 2.5 million households per day.

These LNG projects include ‘Golden Pass LNG’ under construction in Texas jointly by ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum and ‘Magnolia LNG’ under construction by Glenfarne Group in Louisiana.

Faced with sanctions after the invasion of Ukraine, Russia is facing accusations of weaponizing energy by completely suspending natural gas supplies to EU member states, Poland and Bulgaria.

The Ministry of Energy did not specify which countries the increased export volume would go to, citing only those countries that are not prohibited by US law and policy.

Energy Minister Jennifer Granholm said: “We want to send a signal that we want to partner.

However, Bloomberg said the move would not be an immediate solution to concerns about the EU’s natural gas supply shortage.

The Golden Pass LNG project is expected to begin production in 2024 and export from 2025.

The Magnolia LNG project has not started construction yet, and gas exports are expected from around 2027.

The move follows the Ministry of Energy’s permission to export an additional 720 million cubic feet (238.8 million cubic meters) of natural gas per day last month.

At the time, the Ministry of Energy allowed the LNG producer, Senior Energy, to export to any country that the United States does not have a free trade agreement with, including all of Europe.

White House press secretary Jen Saki called the suspension of exports “a weaponization of energy supplies that Russia had already expected to take.”

Saki said last month that the United States had launched a task force with the European Union to tackle energy security issues and that it would reduce Russia’s ability to use energy to coerce Europe and reduce Europe’s dependence on Russia’s energy.

A spokesperson for Saki said that the US had also made contact with Poland and Bulgaria, which are victims of supply cuts.
