(New York = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ko Il-hwan = Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 22nd (local time) that Dubai was packed with football fans from all over the world who came to support the World Cup held in neighboring countries and Qatar.
The reason why Dubai, which is not a host country, enjoys a special World Cup is because of its economic and cultural infrastructure.
Unlike Qatar, where there are not enough accommodation facilities for foreign football fans, Dubai, one of the most popular tourist cities in the Middle East, has accommodation at different price points.
Dubai has allocated a new hotel built on the man-made island ‘Palm Jumeirah’, a popular tourist destination, as accommodation for football fans.

In addition, Dubai’s liberal atmosphere, which allows foreign tourists to drink, is also seen as a major factor in attracting football fans.
Qatar adheres to strict drinking and dress regulations which are more or less the same as before during the tournament.
Initially, the intention was to allow the sale of beer in designated areas near the stadium, but it was reversed just before the tournament, disappointing football fans.
Gareth Evans, a member of the Welsh football team’s cheering squad, The Barry Horns, who are staying in Dubai during the tournament and traveling back and forth from Qatar, said, “Qatar culture doesn’t seem to co- go well with us. We’re drinkers.”
WSJ reported that a terminal at Dubai Airport ran out of beer on the day of the matches between England and Iran and Wales and the United States.
This is because there were not a few fans from England and Wales who wanted to watch the game in Qatar after drinking as much as they could in Dubai, where beer is sold.
Dubai and Doha, Qatar are only an hour away by plane.
As dozens of flights connect the two cities every day, thousands of football fans are known to enjoy the World Cup by staying overnight in Dubai and visiting Qatar only on match days.
Dubai applied simplified entry and exit procedures for tourists during the World Cup to reduce the time it takes to travel to and from Qatar.
Kabir Mulchandani, manager of Dubai Five Hotels, said more than 90% of rooms during the World Cup were booked.
