[이슈체크] Children of high-ranking officials exempt from military service ‘like Eun Sung-soo’s son’

Even if you are accused of staying abroad… There is no ‘forced means’, helpless

[앵커]

Following reporter Kim Tae-young yesterday (the 5th), reporter Choi Soo-yeon came out to explain the details today.

Like Eun, do you often come back after being accused and do your military service?

[기자]

Very rare. We requested and analyzed related data from the Military Manpower Administration through the Office of the People’s Power, Ha Tae-kyung.

Like Eun, 711 people were accused of violating the period of overseas travel over 5 years.

Of these, only 30 returned and served in the military, less than 5% of the total.

[앵커]

5%? So, you’re saying that the other 95% will survive?

[기자]

Over 650 people are still living abroad.

It can be seen as a case similar to Eun.

If you stay abroad even if you are accused, there is virtually no compulsory way to bring them back.

[앵커]

Whether intentionally or not, doesn’t it happen that people stay in a foreign country without returning and eventually get exempted from military service?

[기자]

Yes. 29 people have expired military service obligations.

Eun also obtained permanent residency, so if she continues to live in the U.S. without returning to her home country, her military service obligation will disappear from the age of 38.

[앵커]

It seems that Eun’s case is not the first. A child of a high-ranking official, has something similar happened in the past?

[기자]

you’re right. Therefore, the Military Manpower Administration separately manages the list of children of high-ranking public officials, but only 10 have been exempted due to renunciation or loss of dual citizenship in the past 5 years.

Since ex-Chairman Eun-eun is excluded here, it is estimated that there are more former and current cases.

[앵커]

As I said yesterday, isn’t this difficult for an ordinary person to think about?

[기자]

In order to stay abroad for a long period of time, various conditions such as economic support must be supported, but it is difficult to deny that children from high-ranking social classes have an advantage.

Of course, if you are exempted from the military without permission from the Military Manpower Administration, there will be restrictions on employment in Korea.

However, this is not a big limitation for those who are already living abroad.

[앵커]

What action will the Military Manpower Administration take?

[기자]

The Military Manpower Administration is taking all possible measures.

The website discloses the real names of violators during overseas travel.

File a criminal complaint or keep contacting the person or family member to return home.

[앵커]

Well, will it work?

[기자]

It is pointed out that there are only passive measures because criminal charges are not enough unless they return to Korea.

As the military service law is a domestic law, it does not apply to overseas Interpol wants.

So, there is also an argument that the National Assembly should strengthen measures such as raising the regulation that is exempt from the age of 38 if you are accused of not returning to your country.

Actual related laws have also been proposed.
