First of all, doesn’t the portrait of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il symbolize North Korea’s leadership system?

Yes, it is.
First, let’s take a look at the screen of the North Korean Workers’ Party plenary meeting held in April 2018.
A large portrait of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, the grandfather and father of Chairman Kim Jong-un, hangs in front of the conference hall.
From the top, the slogan “Let’s make the whole party and society into Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism!” is also clear.

This is the screen we usually see, but is this different now?

Yes. If you look at the video of the 8th Party Congress held in January of this year, the difference is clear.
Although the background is the same, there is no portrait of the father and son Kim Il-sung, and only the large mark of the Labor Party in the shape of a hammer, brush and sickle stands out.
The NIS explained that recently, photos of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il were being caught in the background of the party conference hall.

Did the term ‘Kim Jong-unism’ appear new?

Yes. The NIS also confirmed that the term ‘Kim Jong-unism’ is used internally in North Korea.
Until now, North Korea has only had Kimilsungism or Kimjongilism,
It seems that the work to establish an independent ideological system has begun in the 10th year of the reign of Chairman Kim, the third generation.

How does our government view it?

The Ministry of Unification said that North Korea has not yet officially and publicly mentioned ‘Kim Jong-unism’, and that it will not predict its intentions.
At the same time, I paid attention to the fact that Chairman Kim was appointed as the general secretary in the 10th year of his rule, and the Party Bylaws were revised and designated as the head of the party.
He added that Chairman Kim has virtually secured a political status at the level of his predecessor, and that the trend of strengthening and spreading the ruling ideology that differentiates him from his predecessors, such as the popular mass-first politics, continues.

Chairman Kim Jong-un has lost a lot of weight recently, so there are rumors about his health, right?

Yes, the NIS has determined that Chairman Kim’s weight, which was about 140 kilograms in 2019, has now decreased by about 20 kilograms.
However, he said that he only lost weight and that there was no problem with his health.

Because of this, Kim Jong-un’s big story has been raised, how do you view this part?

Earlier, some media in Japan and the United States raised the rumor of Chairman Kim Jong-un, but the National Intelligence Service firmly stated that the rumor was groundless and not true.
He emphasized that it is the result of detailed analysis using various scientific techniques such as AI and mobilizing facial volume analysis and super-resolution image analysis that can detect skin problems.

Kim Yo-jong, the younger brother of Chairman Kim Jong-un, the Vice-Chairman of the Workers’ Party of Korea, was recently promoted to a member of the State Council. How does the NIS view this?

Vice Minister Kim Yo-jong was appointed as a member of the State Council at the Supreme People’s Assembly last month.
The NIS evaluates that an official position commensurate with its status has been granted.
He is in charge of foreign affairs and security, such as announcing 10 talks with South Korea and the US this year, and is playing the role of an external messenger for his brother, Chairman Kim.
Vice-Chairman Kim is also assisting Chairman Kim’s internal affairs at the same time.
It was found that he was directly in charge of the ‘No. 1 complaint’, where he visited the provinces privately, grasped the trend of people’s livelihood, reported it to Chairman Kim, and filed a petition to Chairman Kim.
So far, the Ministry of Unification, Foreign Affairs and Security has delivered.
