[정치]Reinforcing the Korean missile defense system against the North Korean threat… Development of a rail gun and a Korean-style THAAD

In response to the North Korean missile threat, the military has decided to further develop an improved version of the Cheongung-II as well as the South Korean THAAD and L-SAM 2, a high-altitude missile defense system.

It is also planning to develop a Korean-style long-range artillery countermeasure system that is more sophisticated than Israel’s Iron Dome, and a railgun that has more than six times the speed of sound.

The Cheongung-II was successfully exported to the United Arab Emirates worth KRW 4 trillion.

The ballistic missile interception altitude is around 15 km.

It is a domestic core weapon system for low-rise defense along with the American Patriot with an interception altitude of around 40km.

The military has announced that it will complete the development of a South Korean iron dome in the late 2020s to counter North Korea’s long-range artillery.

In addition, we plan to develop an improved version of the Cheongung-III with an improved interception altitude compared to the Cheongung-II, and also develop the L-SAM 2 equivalent to THAAD, a high-altitude missile defense system known to have an interception altitude of around 100km.

In this case, various weapon systems such as the US Patriot and THAAD, South Korea’s Cheongung, and L-SAM will be combined to strengthen the ballistic missile defense capability.

In addition to this, the military is also conducting research to develop a railgun capable of continuous firing and flying at more than six times the speed of sound to respond to a large number of missile attacks.

North Korea is recently developing hypersonic and Iskander-class missiles, which are difficult to intercept, but the military authorities are confident of their defense.

The DAPA predicted that a multi-layered Korean missile defense system would appear in the late 20s or early 30s at the latest.
