[토요리뷰] The ever-changing island ‘iPhone 14 Pro’

Unlike the previous work, ‘iPhone 14 Pro’, which brought a big change

Just as there are ‘islands between people’, there are ‘islands’ in smartphones. As the ‘bezel-less’ competition to fill products with screens intensifies, the front camera remains a sort of island. The remaining camera hole was considered a shot on the screen. As a result, technology appeared under display camera (UDC), which puts a camera under the screen, but it could not completely eliminate the traces of the island. Instead, it caused the opposite effect of degrading the quality of the camera.

Apple’s choice was different. Instead of hiding the island, it was open at the front. The ‘iPhone 14 Pro’ has melted the island placed in the middle of the day to the user experience (UX). The new design, called ‘Dynamic Island’, acts as a kind of auxiliary display that moves in a variety of ways in accordance with the user’s use of the app and presents various information.

Apple is in the details. Through the convergence of hardware and software, which are their strengths, they have overcome the disadvantages of the ‘punch hole’ design. Although the ‘notch’ design has been applied since the ‘iPhone X’ in 2017 was removed, the punch hole design has already been established as a ‘national rule’ (national rule) in the Android camp. Apple has been struggling to reduce the front camera space and enlarge the screen due to the ‘True Depth Camera’ system for highly secure facial recognition (Face ID), but the change from the notch to the punch hole in an engineering perspective. , but general user It is not a new change in eyes.

It is the field of user experience (UX) that has made a change that is not new. A user interface (UI) was overlaid on the empty space of the front camera to create a new experience.

On the iPhone 14 Pro, the ‘island’ moves in a tremendous way. The default is a pill-shaped shape which is the size of the front camera and sensor. Here, while performing a specific operation such as making a phone call or listening to music, it expands to both sides in the form of notification of such a state. When two actions are performed, such as running a timer and a music app at the same time, each action is divided into two forms: a circular icon and a pill shape. Additionally, when listening to music or making a phone call, pressing and holding the island brings up an extended control panel.

Apple calls this “a new way for users to communicate with their iPhones.” It is said to provide easier access to information and support better multitasking to provide a different iPhone experience than before.

Even small actions like activating Face ID, connecting AirPods, using location information in map apps, turning silent mode on and off, recording the screen, connecting the charger, etc. make the island vibrate .

Like Apple, UX works in detail. For example, when music is playing, an album cover icon is displayed on the left side of the camera, and an equalizer is displayed on the right. The equalizer is ‘matched’ to the cover of the an album. This also applies to third-party music apps. In addition, in order to naturally express the animation of the island growing and shrinking, each pixel was cut through a stitch. By applying new anti-aliasing technology that is applied in sub-pixel units, the jagged phenomenon of pixel corner bouncing is prevented.

In addition, by introducing a function called ‘real time status’, if an app developer supports it, you can check when a delivery is coming or when a taxi is arriving within the framework of Dynamic Island.

The camera adopts a high megapixel sensor unlike Apple. For the first time, an iPhone has a 48-megapixel main camera. Of course, given that the ‘Galaxy S20 Ultra’ released in 2020 has a 108-megapixel camera, it is a ‘back book’ far behind the high pixel trend. Nevertheless, it is meaningful as the overall camera system has been improved.

Of course, adopting such a high pixel sensor, the ‘Samgu Induction Katuktu’ was also bulked up. Compared to the ‘iPhone 11 Pro’, the culprit that spread the design of camera dominance, the 11 Pro is like a ‘fairy looking back’. It seems to break the accepted design balance, but like Apple products, ‘braining’ (a phenomenon where the brain is tamed over time) works.

Along with hardware improvements, computational photography has been improved by giving it the name ‘photonic engine’ so that it can take better pictures in dark environments. According to Apple, it offers up to 2x better low-light photography performance.

In addition, the Always On Display (AOD) function, which always shows the screen in the locked screen state, has finally been applied. The AOD function works in a different way than Android phones that have applied the function since the days when tigers smoked cigarettes. Unlike the Android camp, which always only shows some information, it maintains the lock screen image, lowers the screen refresh rate up to 1Hz, and lowers the brightness.

Apple wrote different scenarios to increase the battery efficiency of the AOD function. If it determines that the user is not looking at the iPhone, the AOD function is turned off. For example, if the iPhone is turned upside down or in a bag, the sensor detects this and switches off the AOD function. AOD is disabled even in drive and sleep mode, and the screen is turned off when it is determined that the distance is not physically visible to the iPhone in conjunction with the Apple Watch. For this type of work, the A16 bionic chip has a separate area that deals with display-related work only.

Unlike the previous version, the iPhone 14 Pro brought a big change and enriched Apple’s autumn party. However, the appearance of the iPhone 14 Pro is more of a transitional change than an innovation.

Apple has established a pipeline of new cameras through improvements in hardware and software, but it’s hard to notice changes in picture quality at first glance unless you’re looking at the details on a large monitor screen.

The AOD function, which combines different scenarios and low-power design, is more detailed than the Android camp, but it is more of a late addition.

In particular, the dynamic island has kaleidoscopic potential, but may ultimately be a transitional function. In the future, if the technology covering the front camera, such as UDC, is advanced enough to be adopted by Apple, it is very likely that the UX added on top of the camera will become an island a desolation that no one is looking for. . It remains to be seen whether Dynamic Island will become the new iPhone experience or just a gimmick that covers up the impressive punch-hole design.
