Singer Kim Jong-guk, who is the representative health representative of the entertainment industry, also revealed on air that he has suffered from gout for the past two years. Gout is a disease where the level of uric acid in the blood increases and causes inflammation in the joints, such as the toes and instep. It is considered the most painful type of arthritis, as the joints suddenly swell and are very painful, and even the wind blows.

A recent study found that young men with metabolic syndrome are at increased risk of developing gout.

Eun Young-hee, professor of rheumatology at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, and a research team led by Lee Jae-joon and Kim Hyung-jin, professors at Samsung Hospital Seoul, followed 3.56 million men aged 20 to 39 who had health checks between 2009 and 2012 for 7.4 years.

As a result of the study, people with metabolic syndrome had a 2.4 times higher risk of developing gout than those without metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a condition where three or more of the following are present: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL cholesterol, and abdominal obesity. It is known to increase the risk of developing diabetes, fatty liver and cardiovascular disease.

The researchers also looked at whether metabolic syndrome changes affect the development of gout. In an analysis of 1.29 million men aged 20 to 39 who took part in three consecutive health checks every two years, those with chronic metabolic syndrome had a four times higher risk of developing gout than those who had never had the syndrome metabolic.

The risk of developing gout was more than doubled when a person without metabolic syndrome developed metabolic syndrome, while the risk of developing gout was almost halved when a person with metabolic syndrome was treated.

Professor Eun Young-hee said, “It is well known that the number of gout patients in young men is increasing rapidly, but there have been few studies on gout risk factors.” “This study confirmed that metabolic syndrome is an important risk factor for gout in young men. Metabolic syndrome should be managed actively,” he said.
