[현장생중계]Announcement of joint public discourse on local elections

[이상민 / 행정안전부 장관]

My fellow citizens!

The 8th National Simultaneous Local Election Day is now 15 days away.

This election is a large-scale election in which a total of 4,125 people including the heads of local governments, local council members, and superintendent of education are elected, and by-elections to elect 7 members of the National Assembly are held at the same time.

Accordingly, the government will do its best to create a fair and safe voting environment in cooperation with the National Election Commission.

When the election period starts from May 19th, the official election campaign of candidates who have completed the registration of candidates will begin.

Through today’s discourse announcement, the government will state the government’s clear position for supporting fair and safe elections, and will do everything in its power to make this election a festival for all people.

First, the government will thoroughly crack down on various illegal election campaigns by mobilizing all of the government-wide capabilities.

In the meantime, our election culture has matured and the awareness level of candidates and voters has greatly improved, but there is still a risk of fraudulent campaigning.

Accordingly, we will cooperate with the prosecution, the police, and the National Election Commission to ensure that no illegal acts, such as expropriation of bribes, dissemination of false information, or election violence, will be tolerated.

I hope that the people will also cooperate so that the election can be a fair one based on a mature civic consciousness.

In addition, the government will do its utmost to ensure that civil servants practice election neutrality and establish public service discipline.

We will strengthen inspection activities so that public officials do not stand in line for specific candidates or political parties or get involved in elections through social media, etc., and take strict action against illegal matters.

Finally, the government will do its best to create a polling place environment in which citizens can vote with confidence.

If the current quarantine obligation is maintained, those quarantined with COVID-19 can vote between 18:30 and 20:00 on the second day of advance voting and between 18:30 and 19:30 on Election Day. .

We ask that you wear a mask when coming to the polling place and follow the quarantine rules at the polling place.

Citizens! The government will do all it can to ensure fair and safe election management responsibly.

In this 8th National Simultaneous Local Election, please exercise your precious votes, and voters who have difficulty voting on election day, please actively utilize the advance voting held on May 27th and 28th.

In addition, we ask that public and private companies and employers cooperate to ensure that the right to vote for workers as stipulated in the law is guaranteed.

thank you.
