(Busan = Yonhap News) Reporter Cha Geun-ho = “I live happily. I want to do it until the day I can do it if I ask for it.”

Grandmother Chae Hong-in, whom we met on the 24th at the General Dean Social Welfare Center in Sasang-gu, Busan, answered the reporter’s question, “Isn’t work difficult?”

Nain Chae was born in August 1916 and is 106 years old this year.

He is the oldest among the elderly working through the Korean Elderly Human Resource Development Organization’s public service job creation project.

Nain Chae said that she was busy doing business when she was young, but lived a boring life for a while in her old age.

After losing her husband 50 years ago, living with her son and spending the day at the Elderly Center for 15 years was her daily routine.

However, the elderly jobs project, which started as an accidental opportunity in 2019, created a new vitality in the life of a grandmother after the age of 100.

When the reporter visited the workplace for an interview, the first appearance of the grandmother was a surprise.

He was sweeping every nook and cranny of the rail with a clover broom in one hand, and if he hadn’t heard about his age, he would have thought he was in his 70s or 80s.

Apart from her white hair and no teeth, she had an innocent smile like a girl, walked briskly with a straight back, and polished the desk while mopping, just like a young person.

Usually, interviews with elderly people often ask for help from people around them, but with my grandmother, every conversation went smoothly, and she even used the English word “trauma.”

Chae’s grandmother said that she and her 78-year-old grandmother were responsible for cleaning five rooms and a corridor on the second floor of the welfare centre.

I went to work 8 times a month, on a certain date, from 9:00 am to 12:00, and worked 3 full hours.

Except for the time when he was infected with Corona 19 and had treatment this year, he worked diligently for three years without leave.

The grandmother said she still has good stamina to walk more than 1 km to the public health centre, and that her health is good enough that she has not had one major operation.

Nain Chae said, “I’m not the type to stay still,” and explained her motivation for working, saying, “Working is fun, time goes well, I make money, and I enjoy talking.”

The welfare center explains that Nain Chae lives a better life in all aspects, economically, emotionally and relationally, since she started working.

Cho Yong-won, director of the Dean’s General Social Welfare Center, said, “I see in the field that there are people who are more accurate than younger people think and who have a will to do activities among the elderly over 100 age “For those willing to be active, I think working is good for a happy old age.”

Chae Cha-soon (78), Grandma Chae’s partner, said, “She is the same age as my mother, but she is correct, her legs don’t hurt, she works well, and she still fresh. “I’m trying not to,” he said.

Before Chae started working, the basic old-age pension of 307,500 earned was all her monthly living expenses.

Nain Chae said, “I get money in my bank book, but I go to the Saemaul Geumgo or the post office, and I put my money on (and spend), and I also use it for hospital expenses.”

When asked about the secret to her health, Grandma Chae said, “I don’t have any health care,” but “live with a smile.”

Grandma Chae said, “Laugh, cry. Live round, live happily. I just live comfortably, and this is in my underwear. “I want to do it,” he said, reaffirming his will to work.

Ryu Seung-il, director of the Dean’s General Social Welfare Center, said, “He’s always smiling and the staff welcomes him. I’m sorry to say he’s cute, but he’s cute. “But I I believe that is the secret to grandmother’s health. “

According to the resident registration statistics, last October, there were 7,745 people over the age of 100 across the country.

According to the future population projections of the National Statistical Office, by 2070, only the population aged 100 or older is expected to increase to 57,330 in Korea.

On the 26th, an official from the Korean Elderly Human Resources Development Institute said, “Research results show that running a job project for the elderly reduces the relative poverty rate of elderly households, reduces the level of depression, increases self-esteem. , and increases life satisfaction.” However, as jobs for the elderly become the ‘managers’ of the elderly and act as a vital motivating force for the elderly, they should be dealt with more importantly in the future age of super-aging.”
