(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Sang-heon = US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln told Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the 23rd (local time) that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is very important for regional and global security and prosperity.

Secretary of State Blincoln made the comments during a meeting with Director Wang at United Nations Headquarters in New York on the same day, State Department spokesman Ned Price said.

The meeting was held shortly after US President Joe Biden’s recent television show that he would defend Taiwan militarily if China attacked Taiwan, leading to a backlash from China. The bilateral meeting between Secretary Blincoln and Director Wang took place two months after the summit in Bali, Indonesia in July.

Blincoln also noted that the United States and China have an obligation to respond to a Russian attack on Ukraine and prevent further provocations.

The United States is open to cooperation with China of cross interest, and emphasized the need to maintain an open line of communication between the two countries, Price said.
