A drunken passenger who gave 4 cigarettes instead of 4,000 won for a taxi fare was fined 12 million won, equivalent to 3,000 times the fare, for swinging his fist while arguing with the taxi driver.

Yesterday (23rd), Changwon District Court Judge Kim Cho-ha announced that he had sentenced a man in his 50s who was handed over to trial for violating the Act on Aggravated Punishment for Specific Crimes (driver assault, etc.) a fine of 12 million won.

Mr. A got into a taxi driven by Mr. B on a roadside in Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do in a drunken state at around 2:30 am on June 25, and arrived at his destination, but did not pay 4,000 won for the taxi. Mr. A handed over 4 cigarettes instead of the fee.

When Mr. B did not receive a taxi fare from Mr. A, who was reckless, he turned the wheel and headed for the nearby district. At this, Mr. A said, “Are you going to the police box for 4,000 won?” and spit out abusive language at Mr. B and beat him.

As a result, it is reported that B suffered injuries to his face and back.

As a result of the police investigation, Mr. A had a history of the same type of crime. It was revealed that he committed these crimes during the period of repeated offenses.

The court imposed a fine of 12 million won, saying, “We reached an agreement with the victim at the investigation stage and decided on the punishment in consideration of various sentencing factors, including acknowledging and reflecting on the wrongdoing.”
