(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Yuhan-joo = The funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II of England has attracted a lot of attention in Britain and the United States.

The BBC reported an average UK audience of 26.2 million for live coverage of the Queen’s Funeral, which was seen strictly at Westminster Abbey from 11am on the 19th (local time), according to the official viewership ratings agency. (BARB) figures, reported 20 a day.

In particular, in the scene where the coffin was being carried from the temple building at around 12:25 pm, it was calculated that it reached a peak of 28 million viewers at the moment.

This equates to 41% of the UK population.

It is estimated that the actual number of viewers is higher, given that this does not include viewers of broadcast streaming programs (apps) and that many people attended the funeral in big screen plazas, movie theaters, churches and pubs at the time.

However, the BBC explained that the figure did not match Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997, which recorded 32 million viewers, the highest number so far on British television.

In the United States, there was also a lot of interest in the Queen’s funeral.

The daily Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing Nielsen data, said that at that time more than 10 million people watched the funeral through major broadcasters such as ABC, NBC, and CNN.

The most watched was ABC News, which averaged over 3 million viewers on its last run through the channel.

The WSJ explained that if data from other broadcasters such as PBS were included, the number of viewers in the United States is expected to increase further.

Media analyst Carolina Bertramo previously predicted that around 4 billion of the world’s 7.7 billion people would attend the funeral, saying, “Half of the planet will be people who want to witness a historic moment and pay their respects.”

The number of viewers worldwide for Elizabeth II’s funeral has not yet been officially counted.

The record so far was the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, which was watched by 3.6 billion people.

It was followed by the funeral of Princess Diana (2.5 billion people), and then the Live 8 concert held in 2005 (2 billion people) calling for an end to poverty in Africa.
