The death toll from an explosion in a coal mine in northern Turkey (Turkey) has risen to 41, Reuters news agency and AFP reported on the 15th (local time).

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Turkiye said he visited the Amasra mine accident site on the same day and found the last missing person.

President Erdogan visited the scene to encourage rescue operations and comfort the victims and their families.

In the Amasra mine where the explosion happened the other day, 110 people were working, the first death toll was 14, but the death toll from the injured and rescued burials is said to continue to rise .

Fifty-eight people escaped the scene safely, and one of the 11 injured was released and the other 10 are receiving treatment in hospital.

Energy Minister Fatich Donmez explained that the rescue work was completed 20 hours after the accident, and after the large fire was extinguished, the work continued to extinguish the remaining fire.

Regarding the circumstances of the accident, it was revealed that the fire occurred following an explosion in a tunnel 300 to 350 meters underground.

The Turkiye Disaster and Risk Management Agency (AFAD) believes that combustible methane gas from the coal mine ignited and led to the explosion.

However, after retracting the initial report that it appeared that a spark from a malfunctioning transformer had caused the explosion, he explained that an investigation was still being carried out into the cause of the fire.

Local prosecutors have launched a formal investigation into the incident.

The Turkiye Police Department said on social media that it would take legal action against 12 users who incited hate in connection with the incident.

According to the Turkish authorities, a roaring explosion occurred in a coal mine in the Amasra region off the Black Sea coast at around 6:45pm the day before.

As the rocks surrounding the tunnel collapsed due to the explosion, nearly 50 workers were once trapped in the underground tunnel, and around 70 rescuers are working on the rescue for the second day.

Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote a letter to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Turkiye, saying, “I express my deepest condolences to the tragic accident. Tell me,” he said.

In 2014, a fire in a coal mine in Soma, western Turkiye, killed a total of 301 people.
