[세종=뉴스핌] Reporter Lee Kyung-tae = For regional distribution of data centers, a discount of up to 50% of the facility fee is provided for non-metropolitan areas. When data centers are established in Gangwon, Gyeongbuk, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk regions, support is expected to range from 5 billion to 100 billion won.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will hold a ‘data center regional distribution policy briefing’ with KEPCO and local governments at South Seoul Headquarters of Korea Power Electric Corporation at 2:00 pm on the 18th.

This briefing session was prepared to explain the ‘Measures to Facilitate Concentration in the Metropolitan Area of Data Centres’, discussed at the ‘Distributed Data Center Meeting’ on November 9 last year, to companies that will be installing or operating data centers future data.

In order to decentralize data centers, first of all, for data centers that use a large amount of electricity, if the reliability of the system and quality standards are not met, the authority is given to suspend or refuse electricity supply exceptionally. System evaluation is also being strengthened, such as making it mandatory to use KEPCO’s power supply plan notification results when consultations on energy use plans are held.

It intends to evaluate the ripple effect of new data center systems in grid-saturated areas such as the metropolitan area and prepare plans to reduce negative ripple effects. The ‘system impact assessment system’, which checks and reports back on the implementation status, is also planned to be introduced when the ‘Distributed Energy Revitalization Special Act’ comes into force.

For data centers located in non-metropolitan areas, incentives such as 50% discount on facility charges such as cables and switchgear when connected to the distribution network (22.9kV) and exemption from power charges standby when connected to the transmission network (154kV) are provided. The scope of information provision of the power redundancy disclosure system will be identified and provided from the existing 345kV substation range of Si/Gun/Gu units to the 154kV substation range of Eup/Myeon/Dong units .

Establish a data center location consultation support center within KEPCO and link it to the power system’s information delivery system, and implement dedicated consultation support windows for each KEPCO 15 regional headquarters.

Renewable energy output control and transmission constraints will occur so that excess power can be used. Identify candidate areas, focusing on areas where power system infrastructure such as transmission grids and substations are adequately protected in advance, and link them to local government incentives.

In the case of Gangwon, up to KRW 35 billion is supported for large-scale investments of KRW 50 billion or more. Gyeongbuk provides up to 5 billion won in subsidies for placement facilities. Jeonnam will support 10 to 100 billion won in investment subsidies, provide free land, and provide long-term leases. Jeonbuk supports up to 30 billion won for large-scale investments of 300 billion won or more.

Cheon Yeong-gil, head of the Department of Energy Policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said, “Data centers are the core of the digital economy, but as the concentration in the metropolitan area intensifies, the construction of additional power infrastructure like this increases . as transmission and distribution networks are demanding, and there are concerns about grid congestion.” In order to operate, cooperation is needed from industry and local governments to distribute locations to areas with abundant power supply and good access to the grid.”
