India’s rank in the Economic Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) 2020 Democracy Index drops to 53. Violations of democracy and civil rights violations are the main reasons for the country’s decline in the index. India’s overall score dropped from 6.9 in 2019 to 6.61. In 2019, it was ranked 51st.
The country, which was ranked 27th in 2014 with a score of 7.92, has slipped to 53 out of 167 countries during the six years of Modi rule. The EIU pointed out that the Narendra Modi government, which had introduced a religious component in the determination of Indian citizenship, had undermined the secular foundation. Kovid is facing an epidemic that is further undermining civil liberties.
Fifty-two countries, including India, are imperfect democracies. Other countries are divided into total democracies (23), joint states (35) and dictatorships (57). Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand and Canada are at the top of the index.
