607 mass shootings in the US this year… Possibly the second worst year ever

US group counts deaths of more than 4 people… More than 610 cases expected in 2020

More than 600 mass shootings have occurred in the United States this year, and this is expected to be the second highest year on record after last year.

Citing data from the Gun Violence Archives of America (GVA), a non-profit organization, CNN reported on the 23rd (local time) that at least 607 mass shootings have occurred this year so far on the 22nd.

This is slightly less than the 638 cases in the same period last year.

If current trends continue, the number of mass shootings this year is likely to exceed 610 in 2020.

The group defines a mass shooting as any incident where there are four or more casualties.

The New York Times (NYT) pointed out that it is a complicated situation for the government or private organizations to publish related statistics because there is no clear socially agreed upon definition of a mass shooting.

The GVA began counting mass shootings in 2014, but the number of incidents has been increasing each year.

In particular, from 417 cases in 2019 to 610 cases in 2020 and 690 cases last year, there has been a recent surge.

At least 3,179 people have been killed in mass shootings this year.

Of these, 637 people died and 2,500 were injured.

In the same period last year, 645 out of 3,267 victims died, and in 2020, 463 out of 2,873 lost their lives.

On the night of the 22nd, a shooting occurred at a Walmart store in Chesapeake, Virginia, killing 6 people and injuring 4 others.

Including this, at least 24 people were killed and 37 injured in mass shootings that occurred in seven states in the United States last week alone.

In November alone, there were 32 cases where 177 people were shot and 43 people died.

In the same period last year, 160 people were shot and 34 killed in 36 mass shootings.
