7 islanders killed by eating turtle meat in Tanzania

(NAROBI = Yonhap News) Correspondent Umangwon = Seven people died and three were hospitalized after eating sea turtle meat in the semi-autonomous province of Zanzibar in Tanzania, BBC reported on the 29th (local time).

According to reports, local police said on the 25th that at least five families ate tortoise meat on the island of Pemba, Zanzibar, and seven people, including a three-year-old child, were killed.

Local police said the three-year-old died the next day after eating the tortoise, two more died that night and four more the next day.

Turtle meat is a common staple in Tanzania’s islands and coastal areas, but authorities have banned it.

Turtle meat can cause a food poisoning called chelonitoxim.

Although it has not been elucidated in detail, the cause of this toxicity is presumed to be turtle-eating algae.

According to the BBC, turtle food poisoning is particularly fatal for children and the elderly.

Similar accidents often occur in Indonesia, Micronesia, and islands in the Indian Ocean in March, as 19 people, including nine children, died from eating turtle meat in Madagascar, a nearby Indian Ocean island country.
